George and the Dragns

George and the Dragns

Aug 06, 2024

A couple years ago my eight year old nephew found out that I make video games, and when I was back home for Christmas he approached me with a business plan to build a game. He was a model professional. He had a collection of papers that contained blueprints and concept art and storylines and the names of all thirteen towns the main character would visit during his adventure. There would be 30 levels, and soldiers and villagers and blob monsters that were made of lightning and fire. The main character's name would be George.

Balancing Act

Balancing Act

Jul 22, 2024

To the anonymous sweet people that sent me a few encouraging comments over the past year, bless you. I expected to drop off a little on blogs and videos after starting a programming job again, but I definitely dropped off more than I was hoping. I'm starting to figure out a way to do both, but it's a tricky balancing act that teeters between hyper-focus burnout and panicked avoidance.

Covid, Koalas, and the Twitter Killer

I'm 2 weeks deep in a new job! I work with koalas!! I wish I could say that they were real koalas, but unfortunately they're just the company mascot. The people I work with are basically as cool as koalas are cute though.

I haven't totally clicked with it yet, and the weight makes me surprisingly nervous. I feel like the board knows it too, and is just waiting for a chance to wreak some major havoc. Jared's also ridden it a few times, and he doesn't feel that at all. So either it's all in my head and I just need to get more comfortable with the weight, or I bought a board possessed by an angry spirit that wants to watch me burn and/or drown

Site Update: Refined

Back toward the end of March, shortly after my previous site update, I was browsing the Indie Hackers forums and found a post by an experienced UX designer offering quick "free wins" on website designs in exchange for feedback on his website, Refined.report. I'm usually more of a lurker on online communities, but NOT THIS TIME.

The landing page is now a Hero Page (woohoo), which is just a fancy name for a home page that tells you about the site in a punchy, catchy way. And since this is my site, it punchily and catchily tells you about me.

Princess Program and the Pea

Princess Program and the Pea

If programs were people, they’d all be like that one annoying princess who couldn’t fall asleep because of the pea under her 5 million mattresses.

Boilerplate Code

Boilerplate Code

Boilerplate code can be incredibly useful and effective, but can also be annoying visual noise. I guess it's very similar to online ads in that way; mostly annoying and ignored, but occasionally terrifyingly effective at doing what they were designed to do.

Floopsle Devlog 1

Floopsle Devlog 1

I'm working on a game that I'm currently calling Floopsle. It's a remake of Sega's arcade game Flicky (you can play Flicky here), but with rabbits and maybe more of a story and maybe some other stuff.

Watts Up

Watts Up

Jul 27, 2022

I recently borrowed Austin Kleon's audiobook trilogy from Libby. I listened to Steal Like An Artist and Show Your Work, but I didn't make it to Keep Going before the loan expired, which is pretty on-theme for me (RIP so many hopes and dreams).
